About Us

“Together, the surgeons of Shaare Zedek Medical Center can help treat and heal most conditions involving the hand, wrist and elbow.”

The Shaare Zedek Hand Unit’s team includes six specialists: Dr. Gershon Singer, the unit’s director, Dr. Alexander Bergman, Dr. Michael Michaelevich, Dr. Oren Sarig, Dr. Kobi Steinberg and Dr. Nathan Silver. Dr Rafaat Akil completed his orthopedic training and joined our team as a hand surgery fellow December 2024. In addition, there is an orthopedic resident who does a 3 month rotation on our service.

The hand unit has extensive and intensive activity – clinics every day, an operating room for general anesthesia 3 days a week and additional operating procedures under local anesthesia 6-8 times per month. Specialty clinics include ultrasound clinic for orthopedic injections, a prenatal clinic for congenital cases, and a clinic for complex cases attended by all the doctors in the unit. One of our hand surgeons is on call for emergency cases 24 hours per day, 7 days a week.

Academic activity includes a monthly journal club and research. We teach medical students from the Hebrew University and present lectures at national and international conferences.

Over the years, our hand specialists have acquired extensive surgical knowledge and we have experience in many aspects of hand surgery. We have implemented innovative work techniques  such as using computers with 3D printing to plan and execute surgeries along with the purchase of advanced equipment. Our team has skills to cover all aspects of hand surgery treatment including trauma – complex fractures, repair of tendons and nerves, microsurgery, tendon reconstructions and transfers, repair of ligaments, arthroscopy of wrist and elbow, arthroplasty or joint replacement of fingers, thumb, wrist and elbow and treatment of congenital deformities.

Together, the surgeons of Shaare Zedek Medical Center can help treat and heal most conditions involving the hand, wrist and elbow.
